YouTube turns 5!

May 17th, 2010

YouTube turns 5 and has released a special anniversary video highlighting their rise from startup to social phenomenon. How pervasive is YouTube throughout our culture? YouTube now exceeds over two billion views a day. That’s nearly double the prime-time audience of all three major U.S. television networks combined. Check out the 5 year anniversary video montage below:

YouTube has also announced that to celebrate their birthday, they are launching the YouTube Five Year channel. There, you’ll find the “My YouTube Story” project which features people from all over describing how YouTube has changed or shaped their lives. Check out some of initial clips here:

It’s back…Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh)

May 7th, 2010

When I started this blog back on September 25, 2009 my first post was a simple “welcome” message with a YouTube video clip produced by Erik Qualman author of the blog called Socialnomics. Interestingly enough, YouTube subsequently removed that video for copyright issues. The video was titled Social Media Revolution, and it was a series of very interesting facts and stats that demonstrated the massive change social media is making on our lives. A good introduction to the reason I started this blog.

Well Mr. Qualman is back at it again with his latest creation, Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh). In this latest creation Qualman has included some pretty interesting and powerful social media stats, such as;

Phillies fan tasered, news at 11…from YouTube

May 5th, 2010

Earlier this week a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies jumped on the field while the game was in progress, was chased down and tasered by security and escorted from the stadium. This is actually not a unique experience in the world of professional sports, or for Philadelphia fans. All TV broadcasts of the game cut away from the fans antics as FCC law instructs them to so other rouge fans don’t have any wild ideas. Problem solved for network TV and the G-rated masses of viewers who would be corrupted by such hijinks (insert sarcasm icon here).

But wait, not so fast. In this case, the running fan was captured by numerous fans’ smartphone video cameras and the footage was quickly uploaded to YouTube for the world to see.

What happen next was quite interesting. Hundreds, if not thousands, of news organizations – including those same TV broadcasters – started showing the YouTube videos that captured the event. Anyone else see the obvious hypocrisy here?

Ben Stiller launches Stillerstrong to build a school in Haiti

December 3rd, 2009

stillerstronglogoFilm and comedy star, Ben Stiller, launched a new social media driven charity campaign today called Stillerstrong to raise money to help build a school in Cévérine, Haiti.  His tagline, “Stillerstrong, stealing great ideas from other charities to build a school in Haiti” pretty much says it all.  Stiller’s semi-satirical initiative launched today via the Stillerstrong’s Facebook, Twitter, Causecast and a branded Web site.

Stiller spent last summer in Cévérine, Haiti working with a local school in need of drinking water, food and expansion.  Stiller has used his brand of sarcastic humor to launch the funny but serious Stillerstrong initiative.

The Stillerstrong campaign, as you can see from the clip above, is not-so loosely based on cycling legend Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong campaign.  Inspired by his work with the Livestrong campaign in the past, Stillerstrong was born.

YouTube in HD – Bohemian Rhapsody style

November 24th, 2009

youtubeA few weeks back, YouTube announced its support for 1080p HD videos.  YouTube has been supporting 720p HD videos for over a year, but this new announced support for “full HD” is a major milestone for the company.  Now videographers can film true HD clips for YouTube bring the quality of clips to a whole new level.

It didn’t take long before full HD clips began hitting YouTube in their full 1080p glory.  Perhaps the best video I’ve come across so far in the new HD format is the Muppets taking on Queen’s mega-hit Bohemian Rhapsody below.  Thanks to Robert Scoble for the head’s up on this one.

YouTube Direct empowers citizen journalism

November 17th, 2009

youtubedirectYouTube has just announced on its blog the launch of YouTube Direct, design to empower the ever growing citizen journalism movement.  Self describe by YouTube as “a new tool that allows media organizations to request, review and rebroadcast YouTube clips directly from YouTube users”, YouTube Direct is poised to link videographers and media outlets in a virtual video marketplace of user generated video content.

YouTube Direct will change how media outlets capture and report the news.  The new platform allows news organizations to expand their coverage areas with citizen journalism at little to now cost.  ABC News, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, NPR, and San Francisco Chronicle are among the organizations already using the platform and now you can too.

YouTube’s provided the following demo of how it works:

U2 performs first global webcast concert on YouTube

October 27th, 2009

Over this last weekend, world famous Irish rock band U2 performed on stage at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.  Not an uncommon event given the bands relentless tour schedule.  What was unique – and possibly culturally changing – was that the event was broadcast live exclusively on YouTube in 16 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, U.K., U.S. (other countries were excluded due to internet streaming rights).  See intro clip of the groundbreaking show below:

Completely embracing the power of social media, U2 also featured a Twitter widget below the video player that showed tweets from fans who used the #U2webcast hashtag.

Ochocinco fan? There’s an app for that…

October 14th, 2009

Breaking news from the Apple app store – if your a Chad Ochocinco (a.k.a. Chad Johnson) fan good news, there’s now an iPhone app (iTunes Link) so you can track the ‘low prochad-topfile’ (insert your own sarcastic remark here) athlete across all of his endeavors.  Chad Ochocinco has been pushing the NFL brass for years – but more recently he has taken on the role of ambassador of social media in professional sports (self appointed or course).  He is the 1st professional athlete to have his own iPhone app – will he be the last?

The Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver has been all about social media this year, from flying out random Twitter users to games to his high profile ‘losing my Johnson’ video courtesy of HBO’s Hard Knocks (clip below):

YouTube hits 1 billion views a day

October 9th, 2009

How would you celebrate if your website hit 1 billion views a day?  The video social media site YouTube just reached that accomplishment and celebrated with a new logo, seems to be part of the Google culture – a new logo to celebrate everything from holidays to bar codes.  The new logo, which is titled “logo_holy_crap_1bn_a_day.png” appeared on the site today.

screentubeAll joking aside, what a huge milestone this is.  On the official YouTube blog, CEO and Co-Founder Chad Hurley took the opportunity to look back at the wild cultural phenomenon YouTube has become.  By staying true to their basic principals (speed, stick with clips, and be an open platform) Hurley and Co-Founder Steve Chen built which was acquired by Google back in 2006 (funny clip below).

Congratulations YouTube!  Not only have you created a great company, you have forever changed our culture.  Go Broadcast Yourself.
