It’s back…Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh)

May 7th, 2010

When I started this blog back on September 25, 2009 my first post was a simple “welcome” message with a YouTube video clip produced by Erik Qualman author of the blog called Socialnomics. Interestingly enough, YouTube subsequently removed that video for copyright issues. The video was titled Social Media Revolution, and it was a series of very interesting facts and stats that demonstrated the massive change social media is making on our lives. A good introduction to the reason I started this blog.

Well Mr. Qualman is back at it again with his latest creation, Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh). In this latest creation Qualman has included some pretty interesting and powerful social media stats, such as;

Tweet real gifts with Twitgift

April 23rd, 2010

It goes without saying that Twitter, along with Facebook, have remade our social media marketplace and have become – more importantly – platforms for innovation.  Case in point; Twitgift a new “concoction” from the LaC project out of New York.  Twitgift is a new service that gives Twitter users a way to give physical gifts to other Twitter users without even having to know information like a recipient’s mailing address.

The video below explains how the service works:

Over the past several months, the web has been all abuzz on the “value” of virtual gifts. Twitgift takes this concept one step further – into reality.

As a beta service, Twitgift only ships within the U.S. right now and has a limited selection of items such as; cookies, a necklace or an Android phone case.  As you can see in the video, you don’t need to know the mailing address of your recipient — they’ll enter that in when they claim their gift.

Twitter announces @anywhere at SXSW

March 15th, 2010

Earlier today at the epic SXSW annual conference in Austin TX, Twitter CEO Evan Williams announced a new platform intended to spread Twitter throughout the web. The @anywhere platform has the potential to exponentially expand the Twitter ecosystem. With the new platform, website operators will be able to plug in @anywhere to integrate some basic Twitter functionality without requiring their users to navigate away from a page.

When you visit sites that support @anywhere, users will be able to follow any Twitter account associated with the site without navigating to the Twitter profile page – effectively integrating Twitter directly into the site. For some examples of how this new platform can be utilized, the official Twitter blog suggests that you’ll be able to follow writers, journalists, reporters, bloggers, etc directly from their byline or will be able to tweet about a cool YouTube video your watching without interrupting it.  Full integration of Twitter on your site – think of it.

TweetPhoto expands offering to Foursquare platform

January 7th, 2010

San Diego, CA-based TweetPhoto has grown to become a major player in the Twitter platform based picture sharing startup space.  Now it looks like the TweetPhoto is expanding their picture sharing service to Foursquare, our pick for 2010 social media breakout star.

By using TweetPhoto’s new API, developers using the Foursquare platform can add picture functionality to the site or application.  Not only is this a big expansion opportunity for TweetPhoto, but its a pretty significant “proof-point” in Foursquare’s mission to become a platform enabling location-based service company – following their Twitter roots.

The new TweetPhoto API is targeting developers whose applications use both Twitter and Foursquare.  Since Foursquare currently doesn’t allow pictures to be placed on its site or its “check-in” stream, TweetPhoto’s idea is to leverage Twitter’s service to send pictures out after location information is filtered by Foursquare check-in’s.

2010′s breakout star? Foursquare

December 29th, 2009

It seems this time of year every publication, online and offline, rolls out their predictions for the new year.  Well, we thought we would jump on that bandwagon and make our 2010 prediction as well.  Instead of coming up with some list like top 10 ‘fill in the blank’ of 2010, we chose to be more bold and pick a solo social media star for the new year.  And the winner is….Foursquare.

Founded in 2009 by the team that brought us Dodgeball, the mobile social network that was acquire by Google in 2005 and later shut down, the rapidly growing location-based startup has a simple purpose by letting users share their location with a group of friends.

What’s next for Twitter via Le Web

December 9th, 2009

twitter_logo_smallLe Web, the European Internet conference being held in Paris, has been a platform for a number of interesting presentations and discussions over the last 24 hours.  Everything from Youtube founder Chad Hurley’s Formula 1 investment plans to a fireside-like chat with Google’s VP of Search Products Marissa Mayer can be found at this years Le Web, so far – the conference still has one more day to go.  However, perhaps the most eventful presentation of the day was on by Twitter’s Director of Platform, Ryan Sarver who shared a number of rather significant announcements.

RyanSarverWhile Sarver may not have share the same rock-star banner that Hurley and Mayer had at Le Web, his announcements have set forth a new stage in Twitter’s evolution into a full-blown platform for the social media.

Ben Stiller launches Stillerstrong to build a school in Haiti

December 3rd, 2009

stillerstronglogoFilm and comedy star, Ben Stiller, launched a new social media driven charity campaign today called Stillerstrong to raise money to help build a school in Cévérine, Haiti.  His tagline, “Stillerstrong, stealing great ideas from other charities to build a school in Haiti” pretty much says it all.  Stiller’s semi-satirical initiative launched today via the Stillerstrong’s Facebook, Twitter, Causecast and a branded Web site.

Stiller spent last summer in Cévérine, Haiti working with a local school in need of drinking water, food and expansion.  Stiller has used his brand of sarcastic humor to launch the funny but serious Stillerstrong initiative.

The Stillerstrong campaign, as you can see from the clip above, is not-so loosely based on cycling legend Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong campaign.  Inspired by his work with the Livestrong campaign in the past, Stillerstrong was born.

RunKeeper raises seed round, social mobile fitness ready for primetime

November 30th, 2009

runkeeperFitnessKeeper, the Boston startup behind the GPS-based RunKeeper iPhone application, announced today a seed round of $400,000 from a group of local angel and venture investors.  While a $400k investment is small news by venture capital standards, this investment may have a bit more meaning behind it.  This funding marks the evolution of what I’m calling “social mobile fitness”.

The mobile RunKeeper app gives fitness buffs the ability to train socially.  By using RunKeeper on your iPhone you can track your workouts – running, walking or cycling, build and communicate with your “Street Team”, and seamless update your progress by clean and simple integration with Facebook and Twitter.  This really brings a new level to not only iPhone training applications, but also potentially all mobile fitness applications.  Full integration with social networking applications really expands and enriches the fitness experience.
