Foursquare unveils an App Gallery

May 13th, 2010

Foursquare is making another move to become one of the preeminent social media platforms in the market by its recent launch of their very own App Gallery. Similar to Twitter and Facebook, Foursquare has been gaining significant momentum on its way to becoming one of the few leading platforms on the web. There are over 500 Foursquare apps out there, based on the number of registered tokens.

Currently, Foursquare is only highlighting 10 apps to show a proof of concept for how the gallery will work. They’re asking all developers to submit their app through this page so they can showcase all the various apps built on top of Foursquare.

Apps themselves have their own pages in the App Gallery. For example, here’s the page for Mob Zombies, an iPhone game that is built on top of Foursquare. Apps get descriptions and screenshots, similar to Apple’s iTunes store. The pages also feature Facebook’s new Like button to easily share. And, of course, there’s a big button to “Try this application.”

Foursquare for Business

April 22nd, 2010

Foursquare has just expanded its offering for businesses enabling them to easily offer promotions and view detailed analytics of the patron traffic.  The location-based social network that has taken the web by storm has launched a do-it-yourself tool for businesses to claim their venue and leverage their new business dashboard.

Now all unclaimed venue has a link asking, “Are you the manger of this business?”  The link takes you to a page prompting business owners to claim their Foursquare venue and manage their account in three simple steps.

Businesses that claim their venues on Foursquare get a dashboard with realtime stats on number of check-ins, times of day people check in, most recent visitors, and most frequent visitors – along with additional analytics and more to come.  You can also manage your offers and badges people get when they check in at your venue.

4/16/2010, Happy Foursquare Day!

April 16th, 2010

One day after tax day we now have another holiday to celebrate: 4sqDay! The date (4/16) is four squared. Swarms of Foursquare users are planning to meet in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, San Diego and even London. Hundreds of businesses around the world are celebrating by giving Foursquare users special one-day deals and there is even a new badge. Even McDonald’s is getting involved. Interestingly enough, Foursquare itself had almost nothing to do with it.

According to Co-Founder Dennis Crowley (see video below of Jennifer Van Grove’s interview this morning), the company had nothing to do with the day except the creation of a special badge — it was devised 100% by fans of the service. An independent group of users led by Tampa Bay optometrist Nata Bonilla-Warford organized the event and it sort of grew on its own. Local businesses are getting in on the self-described “social media holiday” by adding special promotions to be part of the one-day event.
