Fotopedia delivers a social Wikipedia for your photos

Fotopedia, the brainchild of Jean-Marie Hullot – former CTO of NeXT and Apple’s application division,  turns your photo albums into collaborative Web pages with different topics and subjects.  fotopediaFotopedia is a cross between Flickr and Wikipedia, delivering an image based encyclopedia of “images for humanity.”

Currently in beta Fotopedia turns your photo albums, from a desktop client, into a Web page entry on Fotopedia.  You can tag, associate a Wikipedia entry, and add Google Map information to your album – allowing you to chronicle your visual story.  You can add photos from other Fotopedia albums and from photos licensed under creative commons on Flickr.  You can post your album on Twitter, Flickr and Facebook as well.  You can also make a widget of your favorite album, like the one below of New York City.

As an integrated social media application, Fotopedia gives users the ability to manage, organize and tell a story with their photos – and share it with all your friends on existing social networks as well as the Fotopedia web site.  This is a site you all should definitely check out.  While still in beta, the functionality delivered on Fotopedia is amazing.

Fotopedia is still relatively an “early stage” company having received $2.3 million in funding to date, from Ignition Parnters, Banexi Capital, SoftTech VC and Digital Garage, as well as from angel investors.  They launched their public beta earlier this summer as noted on TechCrunch.  You can expect them raising another round sometime soon as they emerge from beta.  What do you think of the service – let us know?
