Challenge Games, the Austin, Texas-based gaming studio, just launched a new social game for the Facebook social network called GridIron Live.  GridIron Live is a 3-D coaching simulation game where you act as your team’s coach by calling plays and managing your team achallengegamesgainst other online opponents.  This marks the Sequoia Capital and GlobeSpan Capital Partners backed startup’s first large scale online game deployed primarily on the Facebook platform.

Challenge Games has been releasing games since its inception in 2006 targeted at delivering short-form asynchronous games that can be played in 3 to 10 minimage-1255614868ute increments.  With the introduction of GridIron Live, the gaming studio is now beginning an initiative to bring its other games to Facebook as well.   The gaming studio has announced that they will be releasing a number of other games to Facebook over the next 60 days.

While on the field, GridIron Live gamers will battle their friends – matching startegy v. strategy.  Off the field, the gamers will attempt to improve their teams by acquiring better players and expanding their playbooks.  To accomplish these feats, gamers will use tokens they can either earn ‘in-game’ by completing various tasks, or they can purchase them with real money.  This is how Challenge Games intends to profit from the new social game, virtual currency and goods.  Plus, unlike another recently announced online social football game called Quick Hit, gamers don’t have to download any desktop software to play the game – any computer, any time.

While many of the Facebook and MySpace social games are still a bit rude and unsophisticated, Vice President of Sports & Licensed Properties at Challenge Games Jeff Petry see’s GridIron Live as the first of many robust social games the studio plans to launch on Facebook,

“We want to blow football fans away by combining the level of detail and action seen in sports games with the interaction of social games.  We see GridIron Live as a new generation of applications for Facebook Platform that borrow sophisticated elements from traditional gaming to give the player higher-quality, unforgettable experiences.  People have never played football on Facebook Platform like they will in GridIron Live.”

All in all this is a pretty cool game that should appeal to a large audience of football fans around the world.  Plus, enabling gamers to improve their teams and chance of winning by integrating a virtual goods model to enhance their franchises is ingenious.

Looking forward to seeing what Challenge Games releases next.
