After a recent typhoon, which saw torrential rains and massive flooding across most of Manila and nearby areas, Filipinos began leveraged social media such as blogs and social networking sites to initiate relief efforts for victims of Typhoon Kestana.

Local turned to Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites – along with a number of local blogs – to provided “real-time” updates to coordinate relief efforts.  One specific Filipino blogger utilized Google Maps to provide specific relief data to severely hit areas.

Social media communication is more than just a “status update” to your high school buddies.  It is medium that is displacing traditional communications in front of your eyes.  Do you call, or do you Tweet?  That is the question.
