U2 performs first global webcast concert on YouTube

Over this last weekend, world famous Irish rock band U2 performed on stage at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.  Not an uncommon event given the bands relentless tour schedule.  What was unique – and possibly culturally changing – was that the event was broadcast live exclusively on YouTube in 16 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, U.K., U.S. (other countries were excluded due to internet streaming rights).  See intro clip of the groundbreaking show below:

Completely embracing the power of social media, U2 also featured a Twitter widget below the video player that showed tweets from fans who used the #U2webcast hashtag.

Introduced on YouTube’s blog, the online concert may change the way bands tour and reach the masses.  Not to mention the potential impact this type of YouTube broadcast could have on the traditional TV media industry.  This was quite a feat and was a wildly successful use of social media to reach around the world.  Not surprising that this innovation came from YouTube and U2 (say that 5 times really fast)!

To see the show in it’s entirety, check it out below and enjoy!
