FoxPop turns watching movies into a Social Media experience

FoxPop, the partnership between Spot411 and Fox Home Entertainment, is bringing social media, content and search into your movie viewing experience.  Spot411 has developed the application that adds interactive elements to your Fox movie designed to enhance your experience.  The app gives users the ability to follow the movie via their Mac, PC or iPhone – answer trivia, view behind-the-scenes facts, make comments on Facebook and send tweets directly from the app.

The app is set to launch publicly on December 1st, but you can still request a Beta invitation here.

How does the service work?  Check out the clip below:

After you download and login to the app – via Facebook or Twitter if you like – you can start viewing (socially if you like) you FoxPop compatible movie.  The software identifies the movie playing based on the audio and immediately skins itself to match the movie.  Then you can start your social moving watching experience while FoxPop shows you updates that include trivia, information on the film, and interaction with  and Twitter.

A very cool app – but unfortunately not available on a lot of titles quite yet.  The first Fox release that will utilize FoxPop will be “A Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” which comes out on DVD and Blu-ray on December 1 (the same day as the iPhone app).  Future Fox releases are to include “Jennifer’s Body,” and “(500) Days of Summer.”  In addition, you can also use the Spot411 player with existing films like “WALL-E,” “The Dark Knight,” “Coraline,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Gran Turino.”

This is a pretty novel and somewhat brilliant idea – marrying social media with entertainment in a fun form factor.  I wonder what Hollywood studio goes next?  What do you think of social media entering your movie viewing experience?
