Its official, coming to Xbox LIVE on November 17 – Facebook and Twitter. The software update is free, and also includes Last.fm and Zune HD video compatibility – however you will need to have a Gold membership to use these new services. With these new releases, Xbox LIVE will become the largest social media enabled network connect to your TV with features designed for your living room.
“We’re delivering some truly exciting social entertainment experiences to our members,” said Marc Whitten, Xbox LIVE general manager. “Xbox LIVE’s differentiator has always been our community, and we’ve already seen a tremendous response to these features in our public preview. It’s the community that drives us forward and allows us to pioneer new ways of connecting people through the entertainment they love.”

The official news from Microsoft today comes hours after the rumor leaked that about Sony’s plans to bring Facebook to their PlayStation 3 gaming console. While we haven’t heard anything tangible yet from Nintendo, makers of the Wii gaming system, you can expect a similar social push prior to the holiday season.
As for the November 17th release, all you’ll need to do to turn your Xbox into a super social media platform is log onto Xbox LIVE. If you’re a Gold member already, you’ll be able to jump right into your Facebook and Twitter accounts. If you’re not a Gold member yet, Microsoft is running a deal starting November 20 (12 pm ET / 9 am PT) until November 23 (12 pm ET / 9 am PT) where Silver members can trial new features and services for free. After that, you will need a Gold membership which runs around $4 per month.
At this rate, by the beginning of 2010, we will be immersed in social media platforms on our computer, mobile device and gaming console. I’m still waiting for the Twitter and Facebook widget for my car however.
