Atakama Labs to launch social games for the social good

atakama-logoSocial gaming has quickly become one of the most interesting emerging stories of this year.  Millions upon millions of users have been flocking to social games across the globe which have created a massive buzz around the new industry.  With this exceptional user growth, venture capital firms around the world have been knocking on the door’s of social gaming startups everywhere.  The latest social gaming company to announce a venture capital round is a little bit different than the Zynga’s and Playfish of the world.  Atakama Labs is a self proclaimed social gaming company for the social good.

Chilean-based Atakama Labs has announced it has raised $4 million from two Chilean venture capital funds, Austral Capital and COPEC-UC.  The company has yet to announce any games and their website is a bit sparse right now.  However, the interesting thing that may just differentiate Atakama Labs from the growing sea of social gaming companies is its focus on the social good.  Its co-founders have said that they are working on “meaningful games” that “help you feel better as a human being.”  While the company currently doesn’t have any games in production at this time, they have announced that their first game will launch in January 2010.

While the remaining details of the types of games and social distribution methods are still a bit sketchy, the funding round does signal a potential to leverage this dramatic social acceptance of social games to help your fellow human being.  A grand vision, no doubt.

We will keep an eye on Atakama Labs and report back when the company announces more details on its games.  In the mean time, you can check them out here – or on Twitter as well.
