Cloud gaming may be getting closer to prime time

Earlier this week OnLive, the Palo Alto based on-demand gaming company, announced another big infusion of capital from some interesting digital media characters. OnLive‘s potentially disruptive OnLiveĀ® Game Service which is rumored to be launching “sometime” in 2010.

The participants in the Series C private round were; AT&T Media Holdings, Inc., Lauder Partners, Warner Bros., Autodesk and Maverick Capital. “The funding is much larger than our previous rounds and gives us a serious jolt of rocket fuel as our Beta progresses and we look forward to launching the OnLive Game Service.” said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder & CEO on OnLive’s blog earlier this week.

Will it work? Are people willing to put yet another device in their home? When will the traditional video game digital media distributors finally wake up and realize all online gaming will be delivered via the “cloud” in the not to distant future? All good questions…

Nvidia leverages cloud computing to render life-like graphic images

The Berlin, Germany-based Mental Images division of Nvidia recently demonstrated their iRay technology that leverages clusters of graphics-focused cloud servers to render lifelike 3-D images.

No this IS a computer generated "life-like" image

The iRay is huge leap forward in leverage cloud computing’s promise of “limitless” computing resources to deliver a truly unique rendering service. By utilizing the iRay technology product designers, engineers, and artists can exploit the massively parallel processing power of the “cloud” enabling more “life-like” 3D visuals and greater levels of creativity.
