New video on Web 3.0 – “Semantic Web”

May 10th, 2010

A new documentary written by Kate Ray, a Journalism/Psychology major at NYU entitled Web 3.0 has just been released to the wild. The video produced by Ray focuses in on the vast, dynamically growing levels of data on the web – pages, pages everywhere. The almost 15-minute film (embedded below) does give a pretty good overview of the “semantic web” concept.  Effectively turning all data on the web into structured data to define relationships and meaning. Interesting conceptual overview.

Check it out below.

It’s back…Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh)

May 7th, 2010

When I started this blog back on September 25, 2009 my first post was a simple “welcome” message with a YouTube video clip produced by Erik Qualman author of the blog called Socialnomics. Interestingly enough, YouTube subsequently removed that video for copyright issues. The video was titled Social Media Revolution, and it was a series of very interesting facts and stats that demonstrated the massive change social media is making on our lives. A good introduction to the reason I started this blog.

Well Mr. Qualman is back at it again with his latest creation, Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh). In this latest creation Qualman has included some pretty interesting and powerful social media stats, such as;

Are you guys doing that stupid Facebook stuff again?

April 9th, 2010

Facebook has now hit the big time.  Forget about the millions of users, piles of revenue and astronomical valuation -Facebook has officially come of age. Earlier this week, Facebook was parodied on South Park as the gang mocks the world’s dominant social network to perfection.

The hilarious episode, “You Have 0 Friends” captured perfectly how addictive and downright crazy Facebook frenzy can be. Stan, the lone child not yet on Facebook, is forced to join under the peer pressure of his friends, which leads his girlfriend to jealously pour over his profile (sound familiar?) and his father to insist that he add every one of his relatives — and to “poke” his grandma.  hahahahaha!

Check out a clip from the episode below:

Internet of Things = Boundless Opportunities

April 8th, 2010

Last month the MIT/Stanford Venture Lab ran an event at the Stanford Business School, called The Internet of Things: Sensors Everywhere. The VLAB is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the growth and success of high-tech entrepreneurial ventures by connecting ideas, technology and people sponsored of course by Stanford and MIT along with many of Silicon Valley’s premier players.

This particular session delves into current successful use cases for the Internet of Things. Panelists include representatives from HP’s sensor networks division, a medical software company, and a company which provides sensor-enabled products for vending machines.

The first speaker, Michael Chui a Senior Fellow at McKinsey Global Institute, explains that the Internet of Things is about incorporating sensors and actuators into physical objects, which “make the physical world part of an information system.”

Internet Ad Revenue Climbs to Highest Point Ever in Q4 2009

April 7th, 2010

The Internet advertising industry has seemed to have climbed out of last year’s recession in the fourth quarter hitting the highest revenue level ever. New data from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PriceWaterhouseCoopers shows that Internet advertising revenues in the U.S. climbed 2.6 percent annually in the fourth quarter to $6.3 billion, and were up 13.8 percent from the previous quarter. These U.S.-only numbers compare to 10.2 percent annual worldwide growth last quarter in Internet advertising revenues for the four largest Web companies as reported by TechCrunch. Industry revenues for the year as a whole were down 3.4 percent to $22.7 billion. It was the first year of declining revenues since 2001.

Does this mean the death of Internet advertising is highly exaggerated?  I think so. Like many forms of advertising, the Internet is an ever evolving form of distribution, display and channels. While overall annual revenues declined from 2008 to 2009 (as shown below), the fourth quarter numbers for 2009 where record breaking.

Twitter announces @anywhere at SXSW

March 15th, 2010

Earlier today at the epic SXSW annual conference in Austin TX, Twitter CEO Evan Williams announced a new platform intended to spread Twitter throughout the web. The @anywhere platform has the potential to exponentially expand the Twitter ecosystem. With the new platform, website operators will be able to plug in @anywhere to integrate some basic Twitter functionality without requiring their users to navigate away from a page.

When you visit sites that support @anywhere, users will be able to follow any Twitter account associated with the site without navigating to the Twitter profile page – effectively integrating Twitter directly into the site. For some examples of how this new platform can be utilized, the official Twitter blog suggests that you’ll be able to follow writers, journalists, reporters, bloggers, etc directly from their byline or will be able to tweet about a cool YouTube video your watching without interrupting it.  Full integration of Twitter on your site – think of it.

The new Aol. brand

November 23rd, 2009

aol-newlogosCool, edgy, unique, hip and stylish are all descriptions you really don’t associate with AOL.  There was a point in time the stale internet player was considered a leader in the space.  But those days are far behind us, or are they?

In preparation for their spin off from Time Warner on December 10 AOL is going through a rebranding which includes changing the AOL logo to a cooler, lowercase Aol., with a period.  According to their press release, the new Aol. brand represents a commitment to stimulating content, openness and inclusion.  Clearly the new Aol. is looking to appeal to a new, young, hip social media driven customer base with the new campaign.

How far is Aol. going to with this new image?  To show you what they are all about, they have released a video with a sneak peak of their new brand advertising campaign (see below).
