Real life account of social media’s disruptive forces.

April 14th, 2010

Throughout high-tech history there have been countless over exaggerations of how some new trend will “disrupt” our lives and lead us into a new era of enlightenment.  While I have always embraced technology, I too have been very cynical of over-hyped claims often made by these same self proclaimed zealots.  Ironically enough, I started this blog a few months ago to not only highlight some interesting new human interaction trends driven by usage of social media but to also voice that same cynicism in what has become a high-tech playing field littered with pompous, cliche touting tools.  As I continued to pen stories I kept telling myself, “don’t believe the hype”.  Until now…

…ok, ok – a bit melodramatic I know. But do you really believe social media will change everything? After yesterday, I think it just might.

LinkedIn surpasses 50 million professionals worldwide

October 14th, 2009

Announced earlier today on LinkedIn’s corporate blog by CEO Jeff Weiner, LinkedInpic_logo_119x32 has surpassed 50 million business users worldwide.  LinkedIn’s growth seems to be accelerating by adding roughly 5 million new users in the last 2 months, and the last 1 million users joining in the last 12 days.

About half of LinkedIn’s users are international – which is where the recent surge has come from.  The business-orientated social network has more than 11 million users in Europe and its fastest growing country is now India with almost 3 million users.  Apparently the Netherlands has the highest per capita rate of adoption at 30% of the population (seems unreal).
