Bungie and Activision working together?

May 5th, 2010

Two massive gaming powerhouse companies, Bungie and Activision, have decided to sign a 10 year agreement to begin making games together. Some people may get the idea that Activision is taking over the Halo franchise from Bungie, but this is NOT true according to Harold Ryan, President of Bungie.

“We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP (intellectual property) because of their global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise,” said Ryan. “From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences.”

Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and devices. Bungie remains an independent company and will continue to own their intellectual property.

EA backs Tiger with new online game

April 6th, 2010

Electronic Arts announced today the launch of its Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online as Woods sets out to make his return during this week’s Masters.  While many of his sponsors are running for the hills, EA executive Peter Moore defends their decision to continue backing Woods in the below CNBC interview from earlier today.

Moore, president of EA Sports, said the company stood by Woods as sponsors such as Gatorade and Accenture dumped him because it had a “deeper relationship” with Woods, who is a gamer. Woods’ name and image has been on the cover of EA’s PGA Tour golf games for 12 years as reported by VentureWire.

“He’s in the game itself,” Moore said. “He’s not an arms-length endorser. He is the world’s greatest golfer until someone proves otherwise.”

Can’t wait to see his return at this Masters. Highest rated golf tournament in TV history?

zyngalogoSocial gaming is clearly becoming the story of 2009.  It seems that users everywhere are flocking to social games on Facebook and MySpace to burn countless hours of gameplay.  Social gaming is big business, and the leader of this emerging industry so far is Zynga – publishers of Farmville, Mafia Wars and Fishville.  Today, Zynga announced it has surpassed its 100 millionth member and is rumored to be valued over $1 billion.  Not bad for the 2 year old gaming startup.

The San Francisco-based company has become the biggest developer on Facebook and the undisputed leader of the emerging social games market.  What’s even more remarkable is the speed of growth for the newest games.  For example Cafe World, launched in September, has grown to over 9 million daily active uses.  That means in a given day, 9 million users will log into the game. Fishville, launched earlier this month, already has 6 million daily active users.
